HERRINGBONE HOUSE

This extension and refurbishment project in Henley-on-Thames is now complete.

The property was originally a 1960s house with the standard hanging tile insets, brick piers and concrete roof tiles. The clients purchased the property with a view of this being their longer term home and intending to extend and improve upon the existing.

The kerb appeal of the house was a key element to be updated and the interior was extremely dated and required modernisation, both in fixtures and fittings and space requirements.

A two storey side extension was proposed, along with extensions to the front and rear at ground and first floor level.

Working with the clients closely to establish and define their brief, it became clear that the clients would prefer a more traditional style for the street scene but they were also keen to explore more unique ideas for inside and the rear.

Therefore the new ‘main volume’ is of a traditional red/brick finish with flush casement windows. However, in contrast to this, the single storey rear extension is defined as a separate volume in a handmade cream brick with herringbone panels.

Taking advantage of this change in style for the single storey element, the kitchen and dining room have large openings into the garden via minimal aluminium sliding doors letting in large amounts of natural light.

A sedum roof covers this flat roof extension, providing a much improved view over the flat roof as well as helping biodiversity and reducing rainwater run off.

The interior was opened up to the rear, providing a generous open plan kitchen, living and dining room. A separate study and snug provide more private spaces to occupy within the house.

The bedroom accommodation was significantly improved, accessed via a light double height galleried landing, which was previous an unlit long corridor. The property now has 4 bedrooms including a Master Suite with Ensuite and Dressing Room along with a further guest suite with an ensuite.

We are so happy to see the clients are enjoying their new home now they have moved in.
