Onyx House

This project involves the design and construction of a contemporary rear house extension that seamlessly integrates with the existing home while introducing a bold, modern architectural language.

The extension is defined by its striking black brick façade, creating a strong visual contrast to the original structure and grounding the new addition with texture and depth. The dark masonry provides a refined, minimalist aesthetic while maintaining durability and timeless appeal.

Expansive large-format sliding glass doors span the rear elevation, maximising natural light and creating a fluid connection between the interior living space and the garden. When fully opened, the doors dissolve the boundary between inside and out, supporting flexible living and entertaining.

Internally, the heart of the extension is a modern open-plan kitchen, designed with clean lines, integrated appliances, and a functional island that anchors the space. The layout prioritises both everyday family use and social gatherings, with clear sightlines across dining and living areas.

Architectural character is enhanced by exposed timber rafters, adding warmth and natural texture to the contemporary palette. The visible structure introduces rhythm and craftsmanship, balancing the bold exterior with organic interior elements.

A polished concrete floor runs throughout the extension, providing a sleek, durable surface with thermal mass benefits. Its subtle sheen reflects light from the large glazing, enhancing the sense of openness and cohesion across the space.

Overall, the extension delivers a harmonious blend of modern materials and natural elements, creating a light-filled, functional, and visually distinctive living environment tailored for contemporary family life.
