FRAME HOUSE

A contemporary extension was designed for this existing barn conversion near Spencers Wood in Reading. The existing barn had been converted in the 1990s from a seventeenth century agricultural barn with a beautiful exposed timber frame to the interior. The existing kitchen was to the rear of the property, adjacent to the boundary, and did not take any advantage of the views to the length of the garden, for which the clients were keen gardeners.

The design intent created a series of new views, revealing further extents of the garden from different viewpoints. A single large fixed window above the sink provides a key view when entering the space, with a picture window and window seat providing a contrasting courtyard view to the side. As you further enter the space, large corner glazing opens onto the length of the garden facing south.

Black timber weatherboarding with contemporary details were proposed as a contrast to the red brick rear of the property, but to also reference the timber cladding adjacent to the property entrance. The strong volume of the black timber cladding sails over the corner glazing, providing solar shading to the south and a covered seating space.

A rhythm of three rooflights line the junction between the extension and the existing property, bringing natural light to the depth of the plan and creating a distinct transition between the two spaces. A sedum green roof frames the rooflights from above, creating an improved view from the first floor windows.
